BBOG meets with President Buhari
1 July 2015
Three weeks ago, we conveyed to the members of the public that our Movement had delivered a letter dated 10 June 2015 to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking to meet with him on the rescue operation of our #ChibokGirls and other related insecurity matters.
It is necessary to remind the public that our Movement has had a tradition of requesting for interactive meetings with the President as a hallmark of our civil approach in advocacy since we commenced our campaign for the rescue of our #ChibokGirls on 30 April 30 2014. Regrettably, in many instances during the previous administration, our requests were often met with adversarial responses by the President and the Federal Government.
We are pleased to report that yesterday -30 June – we received confirmation of a scheduled meeting with the President. The meeting is slated to hold on Wednesday 8 July 2015 at 12 noon.
During this meeting we shall not only convey our deep anxieties at the failure of the Federal Government to successfully rescue and bring back our 219 Chibok girls after 443 days (as of today), but will demand a specific timeline that the new administration may have for bringing back our girls and other abducted citizens and ending the insurgency.
We shall also use this meeting as a citizens’ movement to understand, and contribute to the strategy for countering terrorism, ensuring post-insurgency recovery, and other related issues.
We had proposed that the meeting be structured as an open and public engagement by which Mr. President may address not just the mass members of our Movement in Abuja, nationwide and even other nations who will be joining, but also the rest of the Nigerian public and people around the world.
Typically, we march to the venue of such meetings from our Unity Fountain location of our daily Sit Outs. Our march of 8 July is open to all members of the public who empathise with our #ChibokGirls are are ready to conduct themselves with the civility and adherence to core values that our movement is known to uphold always. Like all the numerous other street marches we have done in the 428 days of our daily advocacy since 30 April 2014, we shall first gather at the Unity Fountain as from 9am. We shall depart at about 10.45am to proceed to the venue of our meeting with the President.
Thank you.
